Mikumi National Park

Day 6, 7 & 8

Hamjambo!

So we’re halfway through our second week! We’ve done so so much in that time, but our safari weekend has definitely been the highlight so far!

Before having this opportunity to travel to Africa through university, one life goal to tick off both of our bucket lists was an African safari. So when it was available to book through Work the World as an added extra, we couldn’t refuse! It has honestly been one of the best weekends of our lives.

We were picked up on Friday 1/7/2022 at 6.30am by Kima Safaris, in a pop top jeep and headed for Mikumi National Park. The journey took 8 hours, stopping for lunch and a few ‘bush toilets’ along the way. As we drew closer to the national park, still on the main road we encountered our first sighting of wildlife; baboons, giraffe and zebra! It’s such a surreal experience seeing these amazing animals in the flesh and not just on an Attenborough documentary. We finally entered the park onto dusty tracks and we were taken on a 2 hour game drive before sunset. We once again saw an abundance of wildlife; giraffe, zebra, impala, pumba, wildebeest, elephants and even encountered a family of lions with four lion cubs, which is relatively rare to see.

After sunset we drove to our accommodation Camp Bastian which was an amazing small hotel with lodges, a swimming pool, restaurant and a camp fire by the bar. A little slice of heaven in the wild.

The next day we did a full day of safari, even had a photo with an elephant, very surreal! We then went back to our lodge, had dinner as a group and a couple of Kilimanjaro beers round the fire. We headed back to Masaki on Sunday at 7am, ready to be back in the hospital Monday.

I think it best we let the photos do the talking… enjoy!

We’re back in the hospital this week so we’ll be posting our experiences in the next couple of days. This weekend we have also booked to go to Zanzibar island, which is a 15 minute flight away - White sands, clear blue sea, cocktails, dolphins and more await us!

Even though we’re busy, we are missing you all so much but hopefully this blog is keeping you entertained while you miss us too.

Asante sana for reading.
